Goodrich Scholarship Program
Memories of Goodrich
The largest impact was having such an amazing organization believe in me enough to provide me with such a significant scholarship. I did not have examples of adults moving onto college and achieving success, especially with professional degrees. Neither of my parents attended college. --T Hernandez
"The Goodrich Scholarship Program made my first two years at UNO feel safe. By safe I mean, I was a non-traditional, student and was older than most of my peers (in classes outside of Goodrich); however, in my Goodrich courses, there were students my age and older. The faculty never made age an issue, and this made my experience less frightening.
In addition, the Goodrich faculty allowed me to bring four of my children to class, when they had snow days! This also made my college attendance more manageable." --Tallina E
I enjoyed my time in the Goodrich Scholarship Program! I was nervous and excited to attend college. Being a part of the program made my transition to college so much easier. The faculty and staff were so supportive, and I felt that I could go to them if I ever needed anything. Although I was a commuter student, I do not feel that I missed out on the college experience. I was able to get involved in the activities that the program offered and got to meet students from other cohorts as well. I liked the feeling of community that I had in the program. One of my favorite memories was bringing my niece to the Lifespan Development class for Kid Day in 2014. She was three years old at the time. She is now eleven years old, and we still talk about the time she got to go to college! --S. Garth
I appreciate all of the moments members of the Goodrich faculty provided informal mentorship and guidance to me. I reflect on my time in college (and beyond!) and i definitely had a know it all" phase! The Goodrich faculty was an amazing part of my grounding process. For that, I am also forever grateful. --S Dorsey
Goodrich allowed me to become a first generation college graduate; I came from a low-income household and would've needed to take on an insurmountable amount of debt at 17 to attend. Goodrich alleviated that pressure and allowed me to attend college not only without that stress, but to be a part of a program and community that fostered expanding minds, growing as individuals, and pairing success with passion. Every class I attended with Todd Richardson during Perspectives of US American Culture was so eye-opening. Not only did he teach us the content of the course, truly opening our eyes to the different communities and struggles within the country, he also encouraged us to discuss candidly and to be unabashedly ourselves and human, leading by example. There are lessons and content from Todd's course that have stuck with me and I continue to reference, remember, or discuss nearly a decade later. He was one of the most influential professors I've been fortunate enough to study under, and I remember his course frequently and fondly. --S Peterson
Goodrich had a profound impact on my life. Had my sister not told me about the Goodrich Scholarship Program, I have no doubt I would be living a different life. The Program and instructors had a multi-pronged focus on not only the course content, but on the student's success as a whole.
While Goodrich had many students, as I think back over those years, I feel as if I had my own personal team cheering for my success. I still hear Michael Carroll reviewing my English paper with me. His tutelage led to a recommendation from one of my professions that said, ""Teresa has excellent use of syntax..."". I KNOW that would not have happened had it not been for Goodrich.
Goodrich helped me hone my skills as an overall critical reasoner. Because of the Goodrich Critical Reasoning course, the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) seemed like fun to me. After law school I joined Family Housing Advisory Services (FHAS) where I have been employed for the past 27 years. I have served as its executive director for the past 17 years. FHAS helps people improve their housing and financial circumstances. I am richly honored and blessed that I have the opportunity to give back to the community. Goodrich has certainly made a difference in my life. --Teresa CH
It was a sense of family for me. I always had support from my peers and faculty/staff - people to cheer me on. Goodrich taught me leadership skills being the president of the student organization. I use those skills every day in my job as a lead nurse! --S. Caha
Being able to attend college without a huge financial burden to my parents was life changing. I knew my dad would do whatever he had to do to make sure I was able to go to the college of my choice. If it meant working 3 jobs, I have no doubt that he would. As a first generation college student, the pride my parents exhibited was priceless. I'm grateful to the Goodrich Scholarship Fund for making not only my dreams come true, but the hopes and dreams of my parents. --Stephanie M
The phenomenal support I received from the entire Program made the greatest impact! Professor Don Dendinger was instrumental to me completing my education at UNO. The professors were cool and I felt honored to be a part of the Goodrich Family. --S Anderson
The Goodrich Scholarship provided me with so many incredible opportunities from transitioning from high school to college, to understanding myself as a learner and leader, to furthering my intellectual development and capacity. The faculty leadership and authentic care and concern for us (students) is indescribable. I was not just a student. I felt like I was an individual, receiving individual attention. I felt known and inspired. My very first Goodrich meeting, I recall Mike teaching us about this brand new thing called email and internet. For the life of me, I could not comprehend either. I remember asking him in private because (I didn't want to embarrass myself or seem unreasonable to new ideas or technology) however I could not understand why we just could not continue to talk in person or on the phone. His response was priceless... "I'm sure you'll appreciate it some day!" Was he right! --S Holman
