Memories of Goodrich

They say it takes a village to raise a child. For me, it took a staff of six professors, about twelve hundred peers, and a full time psychologist. I've never been a very humble or quiet person, and for those sins, I have suffered. Goodrich showed me how to behave not just like an adult, but a productive member of society. And that sounds cheesy, and it seems obvious, but then and now, I'm still amazed they pulled it off.
Thanks to Goodrich classes, I can listen, really listen to the people around me. Thanks to Goodrich's curriculum, I have empathy when it's appropriate, and sympathy when it isn't. Thanks to Goodrich professors, I know that everyone has something to offer me, even if it's just "I don't want to think or act like that person, and I know that this behavior was learned somewhere."
Not everyone can say what made them who they are or why they act this or that way. But I can. And that's the impact Goodrich had on me. --Andrew S.

The impact Goodrich had on me was astronomical. I always knew that I wanted to pursue my education and become a nurse, but I wasn't sure how I was going to afford it being the first of my family to go to college and the support of a single mother. Goodrich gave me the opportunity that I had dreamed of and set me up for success in so many ways. The faculty and staff were an amazing support system as were my peers, some of which have become lifelong friends. The classes were educational yet inspiring, and taught me a lot about myself and my interests. Going forward to nursing school and now my career as a Nurse Case Manager, I have taken the tools that Goodrich has taught me and continue to make an impact in my community. If it were not for Goodrich my college experience would not have been the wonderful journey that it was. Forever grateful to be a Goodricher. --Amanda C

Being involved with Goodrich was my best decision I have done within my academic career. The Goodrich program provides various foundation classes to me where I benefit from them even nowadays. Also, being a Goodricher influenced me heading overseas purchasing my graduate studies by broadening my horizons with students from 76 countries coming together. Including diversity created who I am as a professional in a human services setting where I'm currently giving back to the community just like the Goodrich faculty and staff. --Alecia K

In the Goodrich Suite, I was in Patty's office and she asked me "How are you? Are you doing okay?" She already knew I wasn't okay, but it was her knowing I wasn't myself. A lot of weight and stress was released that day in Patty's office. It came as such a shock that someone noticed, cared, and acted on this. That day I was reminded of myself and my importance. Patty reminded me (repeatedly) that it's okay and I should put myself first. After, I was able to ask my GO officer team to step up and help so I can step back as GO President. I asked and received help from my professors in class. My sister came whenever I called (even in the middle of the night) to give a ride, help me breath through a panic and asthma attack, or just so I'm not alone. Being a member of the Goodrich community helped me overcome the hardest personal hardship in my life.

Goodrich changed my life! Shaped me to who I am today. Deeply grateful for the experience. I never forget my interview. I was so nervous. When I got the letter that I received the scholarship, it was one of the happiest days of my life. --Curtis J

"I can say without a doubt that Goodrich helped shape how I see the world. At a time in my life when I was trying to make sense of what was possible for my future, Goodrich helped me unlock my potential.
The program's focus on multicultural competency and the coursework in critical reasoning were incredibly impactful- these components helped shape my character and my capability to be an intentionally inclusive leader.
Without a doubt, the Goodrich program is a powerful equity-building structure that gives scholars a valuable set of tools to overcome obstacles, navigate their futures and make a positive difference." --A Cooper

Without the Goodrich Scholarship, I would not have had the financial means to obtain a college education. The Goodrich Program not only provided me with the funds for school, but also provided an entire community to support me on my educational journey as a first generation college student. As a result, I became the first person in my family to graduate with a Bachelors Degree, and I went on to obtain a Masters Degree. --Angela G.

Goodrich provided me a chance to pursue an education and truly challenge myself and chase dreams. I felt the very necessary support academically, financially, and most important, emotionally, when the loss of a family member risked my ability to stay focused in studies. I also was afforded the opportunity to study abroad, a lifelong dream, which turned into more travels, language learning, self evolution, and a current masters programme in Europe in tourism management. I am forever grateful for the tangible support and creative energy that was provided to me during my bachelor's degree. --Amber J

The Goodrich impact for me was knowing that I always had a support system when needed. --Alyssa G.

I cannot put into words the amount of support that I received from Patty and Keenan. The encouragement and advice I got from them is truly something I wish every student could experience. Being a first-generation student in itself is scary enough. However, having people like Patty and Keenan on your side, who want nothing but success for you make the journey bearable. I even went and got myself a graduate degree. --Aimee R
